KSAALT-TESOL Yanbu Holds 3rd Annual Conference on English Language Teaching
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Association of Language Teachers (KSAALT-TESOL) – Yanbu Chapter in cooperation with the English Language Center Yanbu (ELCY) successfully conducted the 3rd Annual Conference on English Language Teaching on February 27, 2016, 8:00 am – 2:00 pm, at Yanbu Industrial College, Yanbu Industrial City. Showcasing various topics on the different domains of English language teaching, the conference staged many scholarly presentations centered on the theme “Transformations through Language, Literacy, and Pedagogy.”
The conference drew more than a hundred professors, lecturers, researchers, administrators, educators, industrial company trainers, basic education teachers, and language education students from different schools, institutes, colleges, and universities around the Kingdom. Highlights of the academic discussions were Dr. Othman Barnawi’s presentation titled “Speed, Space, and Second Language Learning under the Neoliberal Economy” and Dr. Wael Alharbi’s paper, “E-Feedback as a Scaffolding Teaching Strategy in the Online Language Classroom.” The plenary talks were followed by a panel discussion featuring ESL scholars and luminaries in the Kingdom discussing the “Critical Issues Surrounding Language Teaching across Saudi Arabia: Policy, Curriculum, Pedagogies, and Practices.”
In the parallel sessions, there were seven descriptive and empirical presentations delivered simultaneously by language researchers and practitioners from Majma’ah University in Riyadh, King Abdulaziz University in Jeddah, Taibah University in Madinah, Saudi Interlink Language Center, Yanbu College of Applied Technology, and the Royal Commission’s English Language Center Yanbu (ELCY).
During the event, a raffle draw was also conducted where some of the lucky participants received gifts from the Royal Commission Yanbu Writing Center, KSAALT Yanbu, and Master English Education & Training, a language training company based in Saudi Arabia and Dubai. The event culminated with the awarding of plaques of recognition to the speakers and certificates of participation to the attendees at the Educational Development Center (EDC).
Overall, the well-attended conference affirmed the vision, mission, goals, and objectives of both KSAALT-TESOL and ELCY by providing opportunities for educators, trainers, and students in the Kingdom to advance their professional knowledge and expand their language teaching horizon.
KSAALT – Yanbu Chapter Holds 2nd Annual Semi-Conference
The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Association of Language Teachers (KSAALT) held the 2nd Annual Semi-Conference on May 16, 2015 at Yanbu Industrial College, Yanbu, Saudi Arabia with the theme, “Research in the 21st Century: English Language Teaching and Learning in Saudi Context.” Dr. Othman Barnawi (ELCY Manager and KSAALT Yanbu Chapter Representative) and Mr. Husam Rajab (Head of Research Unit of King Abdulaziz University) were the plenary speakers. Dr. Barnawi presented on TESOL and International Education: Between the ‘Self’ and the ‘Other’ while Mr. Rajab talked on Written Corrective Feedback and Second Language Acquisition: What is the Research Telling Us So Far. Lecturers and researchers from Taibah University, Yanbu College of Applied Technology, and English Language Center-Yanbu also presented during the parallel sessions with various topics on ELT methodologies, Language Testing and Assessment, Instructional Materials Development, Classroom Management, Learner Identity, Second Language Acquisition, and Vocabulary Development.
Dr. Salem Al-Etani, the Vice-President of KSAALT and Managing Director of Yanbu University College, graced the affair and welcomed the participants who came from different colleges and universities in Yanbu, Madinah, and Jeddah. The conference was well-attended and culminated successfully with the awarding of certificate of recognition to speakers and committee members and certificate of participation to all the participants.
